Autism Awareness Week

The beginning of April brings World Autism Awareness Week, and provided us with the chance to celebrate and support the students entrusted to our care. On the 3rd of April we hosted our second annual fundraising BBQ. Students from New Hope School helped to set up and serve the wider Pacific Hills Christian School community with a sausage sizzle and delicious treats made by our amazing New Hope School parents and grandparents. Over $600 was raised, which will support the work of Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect).

The staff also joined together to support Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) by participating in the ‘Walk for Autism’ campaign. We were sponsored by family and friends to walk 5000 steps every day for a week. The $1600+ raised will help those with Autism have opportunities to participate, engage and thrive in the world.

Later in the week we had the opportunity to increase the understanding and awareness of students with autism through our assembly presentation. Staff shared with the Pacific Hills senior school more about the students we have here at New Hope School and what acceptance looks like. One of our students was able to share his gifts and interests as he sang ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’ while a slide show made by our students was playing in the background. It was a great time for the students who attended.

These events were a great time of celebration and interaction between New Hope School and Pacific Hills.
